"Os Protegidos" is a co-production between the Portuguese company teatromosca and Colectivo Glovo.
This performance is based on an unpublished text by Elfriede Jelinek, winner of the 2004 Nobel Prize in Literature, inspired by a real event: the presence in Austrian territory, at the end of 2012, of nearly 100 refugees from various nationalities seeking asylum. The play exposes the cowardly and unacceptable attitude of the Austrian state towards this tragic incident, as well as the immediate and aggressive reaction of far-right groups to the presence of these foreigners in Vienna.
In essence, the author delivers a sharp critique of the corrupt processes used by the powerful, showing how they exploit their influence to gain benefits they would otherwise not achieve. The staging breaks away from traditional dramatic conventions (unity of time, space, action, fable, characters, and dialogue), instead creating a kind of orchestration of voices that prioritizes rhythms and musical soundscapes.
