FORMAS DE APARIENCIA
DE VERÓNICA VICENTE

A choreographic-performative project exploring the limits of the body through the movement of two dancers who are partially or entirely enclosed within two garments. The workspace is the confined space of these garments; the bodily limit in contrast with the fabric that envelops it, and with the canons or stereotypes that constrain it. The selected clothing (ordinary and not specifically designed for the performance), with patterns or geometric shapes, distances the idea of the subject, immediately transforming it into matter more akin to an object meant to be seen and admired.

The body, its volume, whether in motion or static, is presented as a kind of amorphous mass, fully depersonalized by the constant concealment of the face. There are a total of three choreographed actions that reflect on the aestheticization of the body in contemporary society, the excessive concern with appearance and looks—actions that seek to sharpen the critique of the body as something conceived for others. Beneath the visual and aesthetic appeal of a first glance, a much deeper and more unsettling message lies hidden, only to be unveiled in a second reading when the viewer perceives another reality: bodies contorted and oppressed, trapped by their own
garments.

The musical composition guides and drives the movements that emerge from a bodily impulse surrendered to sound, alternating stillness with gesture, and approaching the aesthetic realm of sculpture or dance.

This project was created during a REGA Residency at the Cidade da Cultura in collaboration with the RESIS Festival. The performative interpretation featured Colectivo Glovo, formed by Esther Latorre and Hugo Pereira, with sound by Macarena Montesinos on cello improvisation and Hugo Gómez-Chao in the sound space.
